Be Your Best Self (Think Before You Pink)
Have you ever heard of pinkwashing? It’s news to us too. Pinkwashing is when companies support the breast cancer cause or promote a pink ribbon product while selling or manufacturing products linked to cancer. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month we are here to help you make the best purchasing decisions to support causes who focus on research and prevention of breast cancer. Thanks to Think Before You Pink.
Here are four questions they suggest we ask ourselves before you make a purchase to support Breast Cancer:
-
Does any money of this purchase go to support breast cancer programs? How much? Anyone can put a pink ribbon on their product, that doesn’t mean they are giving proceeds to an organization.
-
What organization will get the money? What will they do with the funds? This one can be difficult to know, but suggest before donating check the recipient organization’s website to make sure their mission is in line with your values.
-
Is there a “cap” on the amount the company will donate? Has this maximum donation already been met? Many companies set a cap on donations, and once this is met your purchase will only benefit the companies bottom line and not the cause you are intending.
-
Does this purchase put you or someone you love at risk for exposure to toxins linked to breast cancer? What is the company doing to ensure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic? Many companies who aim to support breast cancer manufacture and produce products that have ingredients that are linked to cancer. Make sure your purchase is supporting a healthy non-toxic lifestyle.
